KabukiMA presents Narukami Thunder God at Pomona College Theatre, May 3, 2019! The story follows Princess Taema on a quest to free the Dragon God of Rain from a deranged Monk called Narukami. This performance features authentic Kabuki costumes, purchased from the Kabukiza theatre in Japan in the late 1960s, as well as traditional Kumadori make-up. The actors also utilize vocal-intonations, as well as dance and mies in the Kabuki-style throughout. Presented in the English Language. This is the sixth re-staging of the Kabuki Classic at the College. First staged in the 1960s, Kabuki Theatre has been a staple of the Pomona College theatre scene. Brought to the school by way of visionary creative director, Leonard Pronko, the College presented over 20 productions during the last several decades. Unfortunately, since Professor Pronko's retirement, there have been no Kabuki productions in 20 years. We have made it our mission to change that! KabukiMA is a student theatre ensemble with a special focus on the Kabuki style. We are making every effort to showcase Kabuki theatre in its most authentic way possible, having partaken in many masterclasses with Leonard Pronko, as well as Kabuki-buyo (dance) session with instructors Fujima Kansuma and Fujima Kansuzu. This is our first endeavour into the world of Kabuki, and we hope there will be many more performances to follow!
