How to make a dress from recycled plastic bottles!

How do you make a dress out of recycled plastic bottles? Today we’re going to find out! I’ll show you how the bottles get sorted, cleaned, shredded, heated and turned into fibres, spun into yarn and woven into fabric that a dressmaker like me can dye and make into a dress. By the end of this video, I hope I’m going to have inspired you to look out for clothing made out of recycled polyester when you’re out shopping, and you’ll see how soft and beautiful it is. If you’re a bride-to-be, you’ll discover there are more and more designers working with recycled fabrics, and if you’re a dressmaker or fashion student, I would really urge you to try it out. I’m Caroline Arthur, I specialise in making and repurposing wedding dresses, and I can’t wait to share this juicy story with you today. When I’m making my wedding dresses for my brides, I often use polyester made from recycled plastic bottles, particularly for interlining which is the layer of fabric that goes in between the outer layer and the lining. I had some spare recycled polyester leftover from a bespoke commission, so when I was asked to lend a dress for a photoshoot, I jumped at the chance to experiment with dyeing it and making something so humble, into the star of the show. A few stats for you… There are a million plastic bottles bought EACH MINUTE globally, so that means there are about half a billion bottles discarded annually. Tragically, about 80% of them end up in the ocean or in landfill, and only about 10% of them are actually recycled. Recycling some of the discarded bottles is a great start, so watch the video and discover how it's done. Once the used plastic bottles are collected and shipped overseas to these recycling facilities they're sorted by color and type of plastic. The lids need to be removed and the labels and any glue taken off. They then get washed, shredded, and ultimately, once all the colored bits are separated from the clear bits, the clear bits are heated and processed into uniform sized flakes. These are then heated again and become pellets which are forced through a plate with tiny holes which releases them as long fibers. The fibers get twisted into yarn, and the yarn is then woven into fabric that ultimately, that then gets ordered by a dress maker like me. Once I'd chosen the color that I wanted, I dyed my piece of recycled polyester with Ritmore synthetic dye, or you could try iDye Poly and while it dried it on the line I sketched up my dress. I wanted something quite relaxed, quite sexy, definitely with a split. These diagonal darts are very flattering and give a bit of a vintage look to the dress. I had this idea for a sort of detachable cape, perfect for dancing and really good for a photo shoot where you can get a bit of movement in there. Once I had made that up, it was all then ready to be modelled. So you may be wondering what is the big deal about polyester made from plastic bottles? in the 1950s polyester was the most exciting new fabric – it didn’t crease much and was strong, easy to dye and very versatile. By the 1970s it had became cheaper than cotton, and over the next few decades, polyester came to dominate the industry, fueled by fast fashion brands and resulting in a huge amount of waste. One study showed that a single truck loads worth of clothing goes into a landfill or incinerator every second. Add on top of that the plastic bottles that get discarded and you can understand why more and more brands, including mine, are working with recycled polyester made from plastic bottles. Unfortunately, making polyester from recycled plastic bottles is not a silver bullet. The process still pollutes. There's a lot of washing involved. So effectively, micro plastics still escape and get into the waterways, and also the polyester also degrades every time it's recycled. Now however, a new biodegradable polyester has been developed there are exciting new natural dyeing methods for synthetic fibres which is a very exciting breakthrough.
