In rook vs pawn endgame, when does the side with the rook have a winning position, even after a pawn promotion? In what cases is the position drawn? GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan shares answers to these questions in this lesson. You will see an example that shows the winning technique with the rook against an advanced a-pawn. It involves allowing the opponent to promote their pawn to a queen and delivering a checkmate on the next move. But what if the pawn promotes to a different piece, like a knight? Is there a way to win? In another example, you will see when the position is drawn after pawn promotion. The key to a successful defense lies in choosing the right piece(not queen) after the pawn reaches the final rank.
