Nick is forced to third wheel it into glamorous Manhattan with supercilious Tom and smoldering Myrtle. Ashes! Puppies! Broken noses! Half-naked men! Nick’s poetic observations while wasted! All chapters: • The Great Gatsby In Chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby, Nick describes the valley of ashes, a desolate industrial area between West Egg and New York City, symbolizing moral and social decay. A billboard featuring the bespectacled eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg looms over the landscape, representing an omnipresent, godlike watcher. Nick and Tom travel to the city, where Tom takes him to meet his mistress, Myrtle Wilson, the wife of a mechanic named George Wilson, who runs a garage in the valley. Myrtle’s ambition and dissatisfaction with her lower-class life are apparent. She joins them for a wild afternoon party in a New York apartment Tom keeps for their affair. The gathering becomes increasingly chaotic, with alcohol fueling tension and reckless behavior. Myrtle behaves pretentiously, attempting to act as though she belongs to the upper class. During an argument, Tom violently breaks Myrtle’s nose when she taunts him by mentioning Daisy’s name. The chapter ends with Nick feeling disoriented and overwhelmed by the sordid world he has been drawn into, reflecting on the moral corruption that underlies the lives of the wealthy.
