The Great Gatsby, Annotations, Chapter 2 ZOOM in and follow along as I discuss my annotations. These videos will help you better understand the books you’re assigned to read. I recommend that students annotate for confusion, reactions, reading quizzes, and writing papers. Please Like, Comment, and Share! *CORRECTION: At about 17 mins, I accidentally say that Catherine tells Nick “Tom and Myrtle cannot stand each other.” I should have said “Tom and DAISIE cannot stand each other.” Sorry for any confusion! Here is what happens in this chapter: -The Valley of Ashes is where George and Myrtle Wilson live; Myrtle is Tom's girlfriend -Catch the symbolism of the Valley of Ashes which is similar to TS Eliot's poem The Wasteland. It is important to see how this place represents the extreme difference between the wealthy and the poor. Also consider what this place might be saying about the American Dream -Another important motif is introduced here---the idea of a "witness"---there is always someone watching and one cannot completely escape the consequences of their actions -Tom insists that Nick meet Myrtle, so they pick her up and go into NYC for an afternoon of partying -Tom has an apartment in the city, a love nest -Myrtle is loud and fake. She likes to pretend she is rich and impetuously makes Tom buy her a puppy from a guy on a street corner. -At the apartment, new characters, neighbors Mr. and Mrs. McKee and Myrtle's sister Catherine come to party -Myrtle puts on a show, trying to act like a wealthy woman, sort of living a fantasy life with this rich boyfriend---a total escape from her real life at the garage. -Drinks are poured, people get drunk and sloppy, and at one point, Myrtle starts yelling Daisy's name over and over, which really makes Tom mad. He hits her across the face with his open hand and gives her a bloody nose. -Mr. McKee fancies himself a photographer---he had taken a picture of Myrtle's mother which is hanging over the sofa (some big, overblown sofa that belongs in a mansion, not in small apartment). -Mrs. McKee is sort of an obnoxious woman who primarily is a gossip -Catherine is also an interesting character; she lives with another woman at a hotel...so she is somewhat independent. Maybe she is a high-end call girl, or maybe she lives like this because it is more affordable arrangement or she works at the hotel. She is a modern woman, regardless: bobbed hair, financially independent -Catherine does not drink, either. Which is interesting and uncommon. -After Tom hits Myrtle, the party breaks up....it is way late into the night....and Nick heads down the elevator with Mr. McKee. He asks Nick to come in his apartment. The final scene ends up with Mr. McKee drunk in his bed, showing Nick all of his photographs. -And finally Nick gets out of there and ends up sitting in the train station waiting for the early morning train. What a crappy night!
