2018 American Trombone Workshop - The U.S. Army Concert Band

Leonard Bernstein Concerto for Bass Trombone and Band, by Derek Bourgeois James Markey, Bass Trombone Allegro con energico Adagio molto Allegro molto vivace Servant of Peace, by Dorothy Gates Natalie Mannix, Trombone The Road The Cup The Truth Dorothy Gates’ trombone concerto, “Servant of Peace”, was premiered in 2016 by trombonist Thomas Hultén and the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in Houston, TX. Inspired by Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld, the composition embodies his innate spirit of hope and peace. Hammarskjöld was widely known for his position as second Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953-1961. He died in a plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo and was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961. “Servant of Peace” consists of three movements. Each movement is based on a different stanza of poetry written by Hammarskjöld. The music is energetic with sweeping melodies and colorful harmonies beginning in the first movement. The second movement features a reflective and tranquil solo line which leads to a spirited waltz in the finale. Gates has arranged “Servant of Peace” for trombone with chamber orchestra, wind band and piano. Active as a performer and educator, Natalie Mannix is currently Associate Professor of Trombone at the University of North Texas. She previously taught at Towson University, was principal trombonist of the Delaware Symphony and served as a member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC. Dr. Mannix has performed with numerous elite symphony orchestras around the country and is frequently featured as a guest artist and clinician. She is actively involved with both the International Trombone Association and the International Women’s Brass Conference. Dr. Mannix premiered the wind band version of “Servant of Peace” at the 2018 American Trombone Workshop.
