TBIH2025 IMAGINES | Codex 4D: Journey in Four Dimensions into the Manuscript

Presentation of Codex 4D project by L’Istituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale del CNR (CNR ISPC) in Rome. In 2024 it won the Virtual and Augmented Reality Award 2024 by Heritage in Motion. The goal of the Codex 4D project, carried out by CNR ISPC and University of Rome Tor Vergata, is to create an interdisciplinary experience with ancient manuscripts, at both historical-artistic and diagnostic- conservative levels. To integrate in a coherent space all the information about the visible elements and the elements hidden in the sub-surface layers, a 4D model of the codex was elaborated. Several outputs were developed that differ in types of users, contexts of use, and types of experience. An 3D Web App, was designed for expert users, a holographic showcase for a wider museum audience, a website for educational purpose on adopted methodologies. Presented by Eva Pietroni, Research Director, Institute of Heritage Science of CNR Eva Pietroni is a Research Director at the Institute of Heritage Science of CNR, conservator of Cultural Heritage, art historian and musician. Her research concerns virtual museums and museum technologies, user experience design, digitization, virtual reconstructions, virtual reality and new forms of narration and interaction based on the hybridization of media. Research into the perceptual and cognitive aspects of cultural transmission is constantly supported by surveys to assess the public's experience of digital applications offered in museums.
