Dr. Kirsten Smith from the Indigenous Data Network (IDN) explores the critical role of "context" in Indigenous data governance. Dr. Smith argues that Indigenous presence in data is structural—not an exception—and that research infrastructure must be designed to carry cultural and relational context throughout the entire data lifecycle. The session covers the integration of the CARE Principles (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) alongside FAIR data standards. Dr. Smith provides practical strategies for researchers and institutions to embed ethical respect for Indigenous Peoples into metadata, repositories, and workflows, ensuring that data movement does not result in the loss of vital community context or authority. This session was presented at the ARDC HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons Summer School 2026, held at Federation University, SMB Campus, Ballarat, Australia on 3–4 February 2026. The Summer School empowered participants with practical knowledge, helped them build digital skills, and inspired new research outcomes within the humanities, arts, social sciences, and Indigenous fields of study. Participants collaborated in an interactive group setting while networking with like-minded researchers and subject matter experts.
