How important is the weight of an e-bike when it comes to the ride experience? In the past, less weight was always seen as an advantage, but e-bikes helped change that perception, while also muddying the waters. Of course more weight helps improve the suspension, and can make the bike more stable when descending, but is too much weight a hindrance when it come to the handling? And is the location of that weight on the bike more important than the actual figure? To help delve into this topic, we got hold of two Merida e-bikes. Both are the eOne-Sixty model, with 174mm of rear wheel travel, Shimano EP801 motors, mullet wheels, and P-Flex flexstay suspension. But one it the carbon-framed eOne-Sixty CF 10k, with lightweight frame and smaller 600Wh battery, and the other is the eOne-Sixty 875 with an alloy frame and 750Wh removable battery. The CF model weighs 23.2kg, while the 875 weighs 26.2kg. That's a solid 3kg difference, with almost 2kg coming from the frame difference and 1kg coming from the battery. We also measured the weight balance of both bikes, but they are remarkably similar, with a slightly more rearward weight bias on the alloy bike. We also discuss how weight is inexorably linked with cost, and talk about how ride feel is affected by many different aspects, one of which is the material used for the frame and the components. We hope you enjoy the video, and let us know whether you would go for a lighter e-bike or a heavier e-bike if money was no object?
