During the late 1950s, Henri Pigozzi, founder of Simca, was visiting the Fiat factory (during negotiations for Chrysler to buy a minority of Simca) and came upon a design for the successor to the Fiat 500, codenamed "122". This design was rejected, in favor of what would become the Fiat 850. Since Fiat wasn't going to use it, Pigozzi took the design with him back to Nanterre in France, where Simca operated as a subsidiary to Fiat. This resulted in the Simca 1000 and 1300, which became two of their highest selling cars in 1962. Like all proper Italians, Pigozzi wanted a race version of the car made, contracting fellow Fiat subsidiary Abarth to transform the passenger sedan into a racecar. This was the first time Abarth was given a bare chassis to start with, and made the best of it with their own bodywork and heavily modified engine. The chassis itself was flawed however, and drivers complained of it's poor handling. After a 1963 season in which the car earned middling results, Abarth founder Carlo Abarth pleaded with Pigozzi to allow his team to construct a new chassis for the 1964 season. Meeting halfway, Abarth were allowed to modify the chassis, but would still have to use the Simca gearbox. Ahead of the season 1600cc and 2000cc versions were built, but a rule change by the FIA eliminated the 1600 category, thereby forcing both cars to run in the 2 liter class. Despite the better handling, the gearbox was still unreliable, so Abarth went to work designing their own, with the plan of selling them to customers as an aftermarket part. A brief windfall took place in 1964, as Chrysler purchased 56 percent of Simca, giving an increased budget for Abarth and allowing them to place the new race prepared gearboxes at the factory. This at least allowed the Abarth Simca 2000 to finish a modest 3rd in the 2 liter championship behind Porsche and Alfa Romeo, while the 1300 went nearly unopposed during the season for an easy 1.3 liter title. At the end of 1964 Simca cancelled their contract with Abarth, as Chrysler decided to move Simca's budget away from motor racing. Still, Abarth would sneak in another 1.3 liter championship 1965, while the 2000 GT fell further down the order to 6th place before returning their attention back to Fiat. https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/ahv... https://thracing.de/ac-legends-gtc-60...
