The Gaol Jail, constructed in 1910 and operational until 1952, featured Graeme Mudge Murals depicting prisoners and police behind the cell windows. These murals were intended to enhance the building's worn-out facade and attract attention from tourists and locals, but unfortunately, they have also faded over time due to Gisborne's renowned weather and sunshine. Initially, the jail comprised 20 cells and included separate quarters for men, women, and wardens, along with an exercise yard. At a later stage, a concrete wall was erected around the structure, although it has since been dismantled. Throughout its existence, the jail underwent several changes. For instance, in 1953, the Gisborne 30,000 Club managed to raise ten thousand pounds to convert the Gaol and its surrounding reserve into a camping ground, offering campers the opportunity to sleep in the old cells until 1985. However, due to the deteriorating condition of the facilities, it was eventually closed. Factors like earthquake strengthening have also contributed to the discontinuation of its use.
