Welcome to your Somatic Yoga: A Journey to Self-Compassion program. ✨ I’ve written several blog posts on somatic yoga that you might find interesting. You can learn about what somatic yoga is, the benefits, and explore somatic exercises here: https://www.yogawithrachelmarie.com/blog ✨ If you’re watching this video in real time, Happy New Year!!! Happy January 1, 2025 🥳 I feel so honored that you’ve chosen to ring in the new year with me and the Yoga with Rachel community. If it feels good, take a moment to thank yourself for carving out time for this self-compassion journey. What a gift! I encourage you to move through this program at a pace that feels right for you. You can join our practices in the morning, afternoon, or evening. I invite you to practice on a mat or a towel, and ideally on a firm surface as this can offer sensory feedback during your practices. A blanket, pillow, and two yoga blocks (or similar sized items) might be useful during your journey. I welcome you to bring these props to your space for each practice just in case you would like to use them. Day 5 is a restorative practice, which invites you to use props. I use a bolster in this practice. If a bolster is not available, you can use a firm pillow or a few stacked folded blankets as your bolster. For clothing, choose whatever feels comfy and cozy for you. These practices are designed to tap into the relaxation response, so you may notice that you’re feeling a bit cooler as your body temperature naturally lowers throughout your practice. With this in mind, I recommend either dressing in layers or having a sweater and socks nearby to keep warm. Day 0 includes a short compassionate breathwork practice. During this practice, we gently scan the body. As you scan your body, you may notice certain sensations calling for your attention, whether that be a physical feeling or an emotion. You will be invited to choose a sensation to direct a loving, compassionate breath toward. With every cycle of breath, imagine your breath flowing into that sensation, and if it resonates with you, visualize a color that represents compassion filling that area with every breath. The goal is not to change or fix the sensation, but to simply allow the sensation to be, while offering it love and kindness. You’re welcome to return to this practice throughout your journey as it can be very grounding and soothing.
