THE POISON OF BITTERNESS- Patrick Boamah

Bitterness is hidden anger. It stays in the heart for a long time. If anger is not removed quickly, it becomes bitterness. That is why mastering emotions is very important. The writer of Hebrews was speaking to believers who were suffering. They faced hardship. Some were discouraged. Some were offended. There was danger that their pain would turn into bitterness. From Hebrews 12:15 (ESV): “See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ‘root of bitterness’ springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;” Bitterness is called a root. A root is not seen at first. It grows under the ground. In the same way, bitterness grows secretly in the heart. It may start small. But if it is not removed, it becomes strong. When it grows, it causes trouble. It spreads to others. It defiles many people. A Christian should not keep a record of wrongs. A Christian should not hate secretly. A Christian should not speak evil behind others. A Christian should not rejoice when others fall. These actions show bitterness. They destroy fellowship. They weaken faith. They damage the church. What should we do? We must forgive quickly. We must release the pain. We must pray for those who hurt us. We must read the word of God when angry. We must talk about problems in a godly way with the idea of settling it out. We must allow God to heal our hearts. When bitterness is removed, there is unity. There is peace. There is joy in worship. The church becomes strong. Our conscience remains pure. Our hearts become light. Removing bitterness is mastering the heart. When bitterness is gone, emotions are under control. That is how we continue mastering emotions.
