Following saving Josefina in 2022 we decided to tackle saving the Nauticat 515 Gaula 1. Although a much more difficult mission involving rebuilding the mast and rigging we managed to relaunch her and sail to Subic Bay in the Philippines where we commenced further repairs, mostly of an electrical nature. In August 2023 we will passage her to Cebu in the southern Philippines for careening and a bottom job. The repairs undertaken are glossed over in this video due to time constraints but we have covered the main topics of interest. We named her East Wind after our family yacht, a Huon pine masthead cutter, built in our backyard in Hobart and cruised extensively in Southern Tasmania for 15 years. This Engine is a Perkins 135 with 700hrs at launch and now reads 800hrs. The generator is a Westerbeke 7.5KW WITH 200HRS. She has 2 air conditioners and a diesel heater fitted. My plan for the rig is either repair the existing mast, buy a 2nd hand mast and adapt it or if there is no other alternative a brand new mast. A furling boom and adding a staysail to the sail plan would be ideal. The problem identified on the sea trial was a loose cutlass bearing that had traveled along the shaft which was re-secured in the stern gland by divers before we departed for the Philippines.
