The Lambton, Hetton and Joicey Colliery Railway was one of the largest private networks in the UK, transporting coal from a wide variety of pits to ports and power stations around the north east. With its own fleet of locos (identifiable by their uniquely-shaped cabs) for over two hundred years, the system served the backbone of industrial Britain before falling into disrepair and finally closing in 1967. Although six engines that worked on the system can be seen today, only two are operational, being 0-6-2T 29 and 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST 60. Therefore, being a line of industrial heritage itself, the North Tyneside Steam Railway hired in both locomotives for their annual 'Steam Gala'. In their preserved lives, 29 has been a longtime resident of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (along with sister locomotive 5, currently out-of-ticket) and 60 has recently become a stalwart of the Aln Valley Railway in Northumberland. However, the gala would be the first time the two engines would be seen together since the late 1960s. Rounding off the roster would be Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST 1208, still on loan from the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Overall, three locomotives would be in action over the two-mile route over the weekend of 14th to 16th July. I visited on the Saturday of the event, which would see eight services running, including one freight run for each engine. The only drawback on many people's minds was the weather, with heavy thunderstorms forecast. Ultimately, we were treated to a couple of sunny spells amidst some torrential downpours, one of which caused me to abandon two of my shots for shelter inside the museum! Trains also ran up to twenty minutes late at times, but neither this or the weather dampened the day. The full lineup consisted of: Visiting: Hunslet 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST NCB 60 (from Stephen Wood and the Aln Valley Railway) Kitson 0-6-2T LH&JC 29 (from the Lambton Locomotives Trust and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST 1208 'Nightingale/Seacole' (from Stately Trains and the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. On long-term loan to the NTSR) I hope you all enjoy the video. Despite the weather impairing filming conditions, great fun was had by all and the gala was very well attended. Thanks to all locomotive owners and the staff and volunteers of the NTSR for making the event come together. Feel free to comment and subscribe!
