Today’s video features the second consecutive Saturday of double Cumbrian steam! Today I was able to do more than what I could do last week and decided to make a full day of it! LNER A2 Class 4-6-2 60532 Blue Peter was hauling Saphos Trains’ “The Lakelander” from Llandudno Junction to Carlisle; the diesel took the train from Llandudno to Preston, before the steam took over for the run North up the WCML through Lancaster, Oxenholme and Penrith to Carlisle. Afterwards, the train travelled via the Cumbrian Coast through Workington, Whitehaven and Barrow in Furness to Carnforth where the steam came off. SR Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 34067 Tangmere was working the Northern Belle from York to Carlisle. This train was diesel hauled to and from Carnforth, with the steam section mirroring the route of the A2. The weather for the day was exactly the same as we’ve had for a while in the UK, full sun! Firstly I left my North East local this morning at 6:20 and headed to Carlisle, changing to get to Penrith and then joining @harnettyrailways for a taxi courtesy of James (A-Cabs Penrith Taxi) to Shap! Here, 60532 and 34067 are seen tackling the bank, with a very memorable performance from the unassisted A2! Sorry about all the wind noise, the gusts were very bad up there and even my windjammer couldn’t cope with them lol. After this, we returned to Penrith, meeting @themodster @thsteamvideos and travelling to Carlisle. A split second decision saw me travel to a location just outside Carlisle near Currock Junction that Tom recommended, and despite 34067 sounding quite unhealthy, we weren’t disappointed! After the walk back to Carlisle, I parted ways with everyone and headed to Lancaster on board Avanti West Coast. Here, bad new began tho filter in and it appeared that 34067 had set many line side fires on the Cumbrian Coast Line, severing the line at Sellafield and preventing 60532 Blue Peter from continuing South. I had intended to film both 34067 and 60532 at Arnside, and indeed I still travelled there when 34067 started moving again, but upon hearing the news that 60532 was being dragged back to Carlisle and sent down the WCML by the 37 that had been attached at Carlisle during the servicing break, I sacked off 34067 at Arnside, caught a train back to Lancaster and made a dash for Oxenholme to see 60532 instead. Like many of my snap decisions in the field, this wasn’t the best decision as it had been decided by that point to have 60532 run light back to Crewe and have the diesel take the train back to Llandudno - had I have stayed at Arnside I would have seen 34067 without issue and then 60532 at Carnforth or Lancaster but hindsight is wonderful lol. Still, it was a delight to see 60532 come racing through just minutes after sunset with blasts on both whistles! At that I headed back to the Midlands. Thanks to all who made today possible, including LSL, WCR, both locomotives and crews as well as the trains and taxis that got us around. Thank you also to my mates for their company and I’m grateful as ever to my ‘secondary planner’ for her support. I hope you enjoy the results!
