Presidio Texas | Fort Leaton | Closed Canyon | Hoodoos

We spent a week in Presidio, Texas at Loma Paloma RV Park. There isn't much to do here, but we found a few things of interest. We used our Texas State Parks pass to visit Fort Leaton. Though not a military fort, Fort Leaton was a welcome stop along the Chihuahua Trail. It was the only defense outpost along the 450 miles of the Rio Grande. Travelers of all types could trade for fresh animals, food, supplies, etc. We hiked Closed Canyon, a slot canyon, formed by a small stream flowing between the two canyon walls for several million years. It was exciting to be up so close to the canyon walls. The sun shining into the narrow passageway gave us beautiful sites. We stopped at the Colorado Canyon river access to get a better look at the Rio Grande. It was amazing how close we were to the Mexican border with just the river as the divider. The Hoodoos Trail was interesting. We enjoyed seeing the unique rock formations. By this time, we were done with the bugs flying in our faces! We cut the hike short to avoid being eaten alive!
