Here's a look inside GM's infamous 3800 V6 engine and how it works! The GM 3800 series was found in many FWD cars dating back to the 80's, up until the 2008 model year. It features many revisions, notably for emissions. Its design is very old school, using a center mounted camshaft driving push rods to power the rocker arms above. This simplicity, along with cheap parts and labor, make it a very reliable engine, albeit the car's they were attached to never lasted as long. Common issues include the intake manifold gasket leaking, causing coolant intrusion into the cylinders through the intake, or coolant to mix with the oil. This would often get misdiagnosed as a headgasket leak. By leaving it too long, the coolant and oil mixture could cause a connecting rod bearing failure, as coolant isn't a very good lubricant, or it could cause overheating as the coolant gets burned off.
