(7 Feb 2021) Thousands took to the streets of Myanmar's biggest city on Sunday, demanding the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose elected government was toppled by the army that also imposed an internet blackout. Demonstrators marched along the main roads of Yangon, past the iconic Sule pagoda, amid snarling traffic. Hospital staff waved in support as marchers passed by and drivers honked their horns in support. Onlookers passed water to the marchers, many of whom held up the three fingered salute recently taken up by protesters against authoritarian rule in Asia. The protesters held placards calling for freedom for Suu Kyi and President Win Myint, who were put under house arrest and charged with minor offenses, seen by many as providing a legal veneer for their detention. Protest crowds have grown bigger and bolder since last Monday's coup. Police in riot gear stood by on Sunday and water cannon trucks were parked in the streets but no violence has been reported. At Yangon’s City Hall, protesters stood on a makeshift stage, waving flags while others gatheted round, saluting. Similar-sized demonstrations took place in at least two other areas of Yangon as well as in Mandalay, the second-largest city. Sunday's rally came a day after about 1,000 people - factory workers and students prominent among them - marched in Yangon. They were met by more than 100 riot police.
