Symphony Tacoma Voices (Geoffrey Boers, director) of Symphony Tacoma (Sarah Ioannides, music director) Amy Boers, piano Sure on this Shining Night by Morten Lauridsen No Time - Three American Shaker Songs arr. Sarah Blumfield Shine on Me arr. Rollo Dilworth We are singing a set of three songs that describe our interaction with nature, and hope for the future. "Sure on this Shining Night" is a poem by American poet James Agee. Its images speak of wandering alone at night, solitude (reflective of all of us this past year) and in looking at the simple beauty of nature that “all is healed, all is health.” "No Time" is an inspiring combination of three early American camp meeting songs: "Rise O Fathers Rise," "No Time to Tarry Here," and "Brothers O Fare Thee Well." Each song speaks of the journey of life and that we are all moving together through it. Family titles of father, mother, sister, brother are used in each of them to speak of our neighbors, strangers and friends, wishing all hope and strength for the journey home. "Shine on Me" is a popular African American blues-gospel tune which grew in popularity through early blues artists sun as The Wisemen Quartet (1923) and Blind Willie Johnson in 1929. The hymn is known by numerous names and variations, but all focus toward the “Lighthouse" (heavenly light) that will guide us through the dark times. The hopeful message, sung by our down-trodden and mistreated neighbors, is an inspiration to all of us. Production by: Timothy E.
