Of all the long wheelbase, high density versions crying out to be done, they produce a 117!! But what do I know this one is already at sold out status on Bachmann’s website (05/07/2020). Within the outer packaging are four boxes, one of which is empty. The three others contain the different cars of this unit. TCL DMS DMBS RRP £314.95 I purchased this one from Trains4U with the available discounts for £270 a couple of days ago. Out of the box it looks very stunning! Intricate under frame detail, very nice paint work on the body, my only gripe on the external appearance, is the rather large coupling between the cars. However, its only really visible when viewed from a low angle. Getting the body off to fit the DCC chip is so easy I thought this was a Lima DMU!! Fingernails or tweezers if you prefer, are enough to prize the body off the Chassis. The DCC chip is a new concept, well new to me anyway. A PLUX 22 with 9 functions and built in “stay alive” capacitor. (1.2 Amp Motor, total current 2.5 Amp peak. 9 Fu-outputs + 2 servo control output) One thing I wasn't aware of, is that the DMS car also has a motor!! So for this 3 car unit is driven by two motors, one in each of the driving cars. I found connecting the cars quite difficult, the pins are very tight in the sockets! In one of the detail packs there is a plastic separating tool to aid uncoupling. Having 9 functions on the decoder, allows you to switch all the lighting facilities on or off independently from each other. Thats, the route indicator boxes, destination blinds, cab lights and passenger compartment lighting. (Additional lighting features are available via switches under the guards compartment bogie) Pressed Steel (part of the British Motor Corporation) built 43 of these units for the western region, the first of which entered service in November 1959, the rest following in 1960. Originally built without gangways, the toilet in the centre car was inaccessible by most passengers and compliant were high! This was remedied by fitting gangways between the cars, all were so fitted by 1972. Green livery eventually gave way to plain blue, some received the white with blue stripe after refurbishment in the late 1970’s then all into blue grey. A few gained the Network South East colour scheme. Bristol based set B430 became a celebrity when painted chocolate and cream for the GWR150 celebrations in 1985. One or two then got painted into Regional Railways colours, all of which I suspect will be produced by Bachmann over the next few years.
