Title: Debate Question - Do Relations of Authority and Submission Exist Eternally Among the Persons of the Godhead? This debate followed current argumentation in the academic sphere between the two sides. Though a theological exchange between expert scholars, the event proved beneficial for Christians of all backgrounds. The doctrine of the Trinity is at the heart of the Christian faith and takes into account questions of scriptural interpretation, theological synthesis, and philosophical reasoning. Determining the identities and roles of the persons of the Godhead is thus of great importance not only to the academician, but to the pastor, the layperson, the student and all who would seek to probe and comprehend the beautiful complexity of orthodox Christianity. Wayne A. Grudem (PhD University of Cambridge) is Distinguished Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies at Phoenix Seminary. He has written more than 20 books, including The Gift of Prophecy in the New Testament and Today (Crossway, 2000), Business for the Glory of God (Crossway, 2003), Politics According to the Bible (Zondervan Academic, 2010), The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable Solution (Crossway, 2013), and Systematic Theology (2nd edition) (Zondervan, 2020). Bruce A. Ware (PhD Fuller Theological Seminary) is Chair of the Department of Christian Theology and T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is author several books, including God’s Greater Glory: The Exalted God of Scripture and the Christian Faith (Crossway, 2004), Big Truths for Young Hearts: Teaching and Learning the Greatness of God (Crossway, 2009), and The Man Christ Jesus: Theological Reflections on the Humanity of Christ (Crossway, 2012). Thomas H. McCall (PhD Calvin Theological Seminary) is the Timothy C. and Julie M. Tennent Chair of Theology at Asbury University. His recent publications include Against God and Nature: The Doctrine of Sin (Crossway, 2019), After Arminius: A Historical Introduction to Arminian Theology (Oxford Univeristy Press, 2020), and Analytic Christology and the Theological Interpretation of the New Testament (Oxford University Press, 2021). He was the Director of the Henry Center from 2012–2020. Keith E. Yandell (1938-2020) (PhD The Ohio State University) was Julius R. Weinberg Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin. His many books include The Epistemology of Religious Experience (Cambridge University Press, 1994), Philosophy of Religion: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge, 1999), and Buddhism: A Christian Exploration and Appraisal (IVP Academic/Paternoster, 2009). The Henry Center for Theological Understanding provides theological resources that help bridge the gap between the academy and the church. It houses a cluster of initiatives, each of which is aimed at applying practical Christian wisdom to important kingdom issues—for the good of the church, for the soul of the theological academy, for the sake of the world, and ultimately for the glory of God. The HCTU seeks to ground each of these initiatives in Scripture, and it pursues these goals collaboratively, in order to train a new generation of wise interpreters of the Word—lay persons and scholars alike—for the sake of tomorrow’s church, academy, and world.
