no history lesson here for the band as they are far too well known....but by the date of this live recording at 'the avalon ballroom' december 1966 the band had only been togther 5 month's and show a maturity in playing that belies that fact...a skip spence tune that was never recorded in the studio but does turn up on a 'sundazed records' c.d. from 2010 'historic live moby grape performances '66-'69. and well worth checking out as the sound is pretty good...this though is taken from another source of the show sounding a little ragged but what a fabulous showcase for jerry miller's guitar work...raga and feedback combined with the group completely on song!...dylan had showed the way with long form songs (we mustn't forget the animals house of the rising sun either...) by '66 many san francisco bands were expanding songs to unbelievable length's... the dead are famous for 30min plus versions of dancing in the street/quicksilver with smokestack lightning and other live faves/country joe with section 43/the great society with white rabbit/the charlatans with alabama bound and many others were experimenting with long drawn out explorations of song forms....i have also included that days poster as well for historical reasons...enjoy!
