I'm more of a Mergana fan, but I still love the relationship that Arthur and Morgana shared. I wish the show had taken the time to explain more at length why Morgana turned against Arthur so quickly in the third season when she was such a staunch protector of him in the beginning. I blame poor writing because it really should have been explored further. Uther made sense, but her turning against Arthur should have logically taken more time then him just simply being in her way to the throne (at least at first, later that's a perfectly valid enough reason for her). Anyway, rant about that over. I find their relationship, no matter how you see it, to be a tragic one. Arthur did truly love and care about Morgana and simply could not understand what happened to her to make her the way she had become or why she had turned against him. Despite this lack of understanding, he still wished that he could have saved her from her sad, bitter, lonely, and hateful fate (at least in a deleted scene) even in the fifth season after she had already taken Camelot twice from him among other horrible things. As for Morgana, she genuinely cared for Arthur as well, until she started showing signs of magic. Something that she had been shown time and time again throughout her life would bring the death penalty from Uther. Also from their past arguments, she had no valid reason to think Uther would treat her any differently; "I made a promise to your father that I would protect you. But if you cross me again, I will break that promise without a second thought." s1e8. And that was before she knew he was her father!. Morgana seemed to naturally, and again understandably so, assume that Arthur’s stance would be the same and was not at all comfortable with sharing with him her newfound gifts, leading to her further isolation. This, along with Merlin not helping her cope with her abilities, led her to Morgause which led to the big poisoning event that seemed to effectively end Morgana’s trust of anyone in Camelot. Skipping way ahead, because I’m tired and rambling, despite everything, Morgana does seem to show some brief remorse when confronted with Arthur for the first time (at the end of series 4) since her betrayal and you can tell that Arthur definitely does not want to have to fight her. The looks between them at the beginning are so sad. They get me every time. This is in stark contrast to their next meeting three years later (s5e2) after Morgana has been tortured by Sarrum, along with Aithusa, for two years. Here Morgana seems completely cold, and more than a little insane, with her complete focus being Arthur’s demise. I really wanted to include some lines from that episode, but it just didn’t seem to work out. I could go on (and on and on), but I’ll stop there. Hopefully you enjoy the video.
