Forum 2029 As public dissatisfaction with the current government deepens, the need for a coherent, credible alternative has become increasingly urgent. To meet this moment, a new initiative, Forum 2029, will this summer launch a major series of events aimed at developing a clear progressive policy platform focused on living standards and democratic renewal. Hosted by leading think tank the Autonomy Institute, Forum 2029 has brought together some of the UK’s leading politicians, activists, academics and campaigners from across the progressive spectrum. Panel Description At a time of democratic malaise, our media and technology systems are shaping the public sphere in ways that increasingly undermine trust, participation and accountability. From corporate media concentration and algorithmic manipulation to opaque tech platforms and disinformation, the infrastructure of our democracy is in need of renewal. This in-person event explored how we can reclaim media and technology for the public good — and why doing so is central to any serious agenda of democratic reform. Our panel asked what a plural, accountable, and transparent media and tech ecosystem could look like, and how it might empower citizens. Speakers: Jeremy Gilbert (UEL), Adam Cantwell-Corn (TUC, Connected by Data), Lena Swedlow (Compass), Natalie Fenton (Goldsmiths)
