BOAT BEACHED at the MONTEBELLO ISLANDS Deciding last minute to head out to the Montebello Islands, I packed as much food, ice and bait as I could. With a 3 day weather window opening up I was not going to miss it!. What was meant to be another legendary offshore fishing trip to the Montebello Islands turned into a dangerous situation fast. After navigating 50 nautical miles of open ocean off the Pilbara coast, I arrived in paradise — crystal-clear water, thriving coral reefs, and monster fish beneath the surface. But then… disaster struck. While mooring up to the rocks at night our trailer boat got stuck hard on a dropping tide. Stranded, exposed, and completely off-grid I was stuck and had to find a way out. With the next high tide not being for 3-4 days I had to think fast 🌴 Where is the Montebello Islands? Located off the coast of Exmouth and the Pilbara region in North Western Australia, the Montebello Islands Marine Park is one of the most remote, wild, and stunning places you can fish. The archipelago consists of over 170 low-lying islands surrounded by pristine coral reef and turquoise water. But these islands carry more than just natural beauty — they also hold a darker past. 🧨 Montebello Islands History – Did You Know? In the 1950s, the Montebellos were the site of British nuclear weapons testing, including the first atomic bomb detonated by the UK outside of its own borders — Operation Hurricane in 1952. Later, Operation Mosaic saw two more bombs dropped here, leaving radiation hotspots that still exist today.
