Gothic Ontology and Sympathy Since its beginnings in the late 1980s, digital architecture has been obsessed by Deleuze's notion of the fold: a world made of digital stucco infinitely malleable, only to be hardened out by engineers hidden behind the scenes. By reversing the movement-structure relationship as we still find it in digital architecture today, Spuybroek revives some of the concepts of John Ruskin, as he did in his latest book 'The Sympathy of Things. From thereon he will proceed to develop a theory of ornament and feeling moving away from the universalist -- if not globalist and catholic -- aspirations of parametricism. Lars Spuybroek is an author and academic who explores architecture, art, design and aesthetics. His architecture includes the 'HtwoOexpo' water pavilion, the 'Maison Folie' theatres in France, and large public art works like the 'D-tower' and the 'Son-O-House'.
