Patagonia O Trek + W Trek Day 8: Refugio Los Cuernos to Chileno Camp: I departed from the busy Refugio Los Cuernos under sunny skies. The trail hugged the edge of the stunning Lake Nordenskjöld, with plenty of ups and downs during the first half of the hike. After crossing a suspension bridge framed by dramatic mountain backdrops, the trail opened into a wide valley and leveled out for a while. Then came the final stretch—a steep climb toward Chileno. After eight days of trekking, I was completely exhausted and feeling the full weight of my heavy backpack. As I reached the ridge above the canyon, gusting winds pushed against me, and all I could think about was reaching Chileno and getting some rest. When I finally arrived, I was surprised by how many people were there. My "premium" tent was located far up on the hillside, with no maintained trail leading to it.
