Artificial Intelligence poses a significant new potential for society along with large-scale risks. This session discusses practical and human-centered approaches to governing artificial intelligence (AI). It seeks to inform policymakers and lawmakers on how to harness AI-based technologies to create a more sustainable and inclusive future by using mainly renewable energy, promoting inclusive decision-making, improving access to education and healthcare, and providing personalized assistance, and accessibility solutions, among many other things. Ethical considerations – highlighted in the UNESCO Principles on the Ethics of AI – are crucial to ensure positive outcomes. Such positive outcomes for shared common goals include social cohesion (internal solidarity), promoting willingness to work with others, personal empowerment, equitable economic sufficiency, and environmental sustainability. Since machine-learning algorithms are driven ultimately by personal data, giving digital users control, individually and collectively, of their personal data, will be an essential step towards ensuring that AI development adheres to ethical standards. Collaboration and coordination across government, civil society, and business is necessary to ensure that proper frameworks and governance are in place to enable the responsible use of AI. The transformative potential of AI cannot be realized without the protection of fundamental human rights and dignity and principles of transparency and fairness. Speakers will share how the approaches they endorse ensure a human-centered and ethical development and integration of AI in society.
