What if learning began with difference rather than classification? This episode introduces Gilles Deleuze’s distinction between the actual and the virtual, where the virtual refers to swarming intensities that become stabilised through repetition and language. We explore how experience contains differences that do not fit neatly into fixed categories, and how an educational exercise can train attention to those “virtual” differences. We then turn to Deleuze and Guattari’s images of thought: the tree and the rhizome. Tree thinking builds roots, hierarchy, and boundaries. Rhizomatic thinking spreads through connections, multiplicity, and becoming. The film example from Jaws helps show how perspective changes what an “island” even is. For education, this opens space for relational, non-reductive understanding.
