How was 2024 for you? Many people I know have had a year pretty much like mine - good in parts, even fun in parts, but generally a bit of a grind and with more than the usual amount of frustration. For me, my personal life was fine but my business was tough going. I feel lucky to have come out of it in pretty reasonable shape, all things considered. Overall, 2024 was an uphill struggle that many of us are pleased to see the back of. And I realise I've had a far better year than those who have been in the grip of illness, lost their jobs, homes, loved ones, been trapped in wars, suffered disasters, or have not survived. I am very fortunate and I count my blessings daily. Today - New Year's Day 2025 - looking for some catharsis and also to give some shape and purpose to what would otherwise just be somewhat random, somewhat manic drumming, I tried to represent my own experience of 2024 in a totally improvised drum solo. Allowing about a minute per month, or a couple of seconds per day if we have to break it down that far, I aimed for about 12 minutes - by feel, not by the clock. Fell a fraction short. The White Ghost kit is an evolving assemblage of vintage and antique (mostly) Premier drums, all somewhere near white in original colour. I've detailed these drums in previous posts, and have added the 28" bass drum on the left of screen since the previous DrumFuckery on this kit. The 29.5" bass drum right of screen - I don't know what it is, but it has calfskin heads. The 22" drum with the cat drawing on the front head and the brass snare in the high tom position also have calf heads. These two drums date from around 1930 and were probably used together by a dance band drummer. There are two old Tascam TR-100 field recorders - one each side. I also put a small mic out in the hallway to record reverb/echo, which fed into the front DSLR camera. Post production was, as usual, minimal. (Tascam sound 'Normalized' in Audacity). There is no editing in the video except cutting between the two cameras; it's presented exactly as played.
