This promenade has existed since Diocletian's Palace was built about 1700 years ago. It was renovated and modernized in 2005. Locals were divided on the remodeling, with some praising the new, modern design and others lamenting the loss of the old atmosphere. The best way to see for yourself is to take a walk along the promenade. The Riva is 250 meters long in total. From there you can enter the old Roman fortress, Diocletian's Palace, through the bronze gate. If you follow the promenade in a westerly direction, you will pass a number of lively cafes and bars. Drinking coffee and chatting is simply a part of life in Split. Locals often gather for this here on the Riva, which acts as the social hub of the city. If you want to take a break, the benches and deck chairs are perfect, some of which are even shaded by overhanging palm trees.
