November was a pretty month. Lavender and yellow flowers carpeted small patches of the park in forms seemingly random yet organized. Many of us were filming birds standing or sitting in blooms which churned out great pictures, great fun and the birds didn't seem to mind. December was more somber; rusty wilted flowers, lead skies, cold, wind and rain. This year, our flocks of Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks which sometimes winter here in the hundreds, cashed in their timeshares in the prairie just south of Sweetwater. A quieter December indeed. But the months have not been devoid of grand surprises. While scanning for the Northern Harrier, a Virginia Rail popped out nervously beside me. Imagine scouting for Tom Hanks in Hollywood and casually running into Jesus. This sort of thing happens more often than you might realize. On another sunrise walk with David, a long time photographer at the park, we were denied a King Rail appearance but gifted a smart looking Wood Duck. This my friends, is what makes getting up beady eyed before dawn and slogging down to the park worthwhile; the unpredictability if nothing else. No footage of my friend the bobcat, but the otters seem to be doing quite well and are accounted for. And we have a pig....for now at least. Who will I encounter next? I would like to see a skunk. It's been far too long. A sincere "Thank you!" to the park rangers and volunteers. Keeping both visitors and animals safe is challenging. Also thanks to the photographers and visitors who share their stories, experiences and love of wildlife. For those new to the park, it is advisable never go to the water’s edge. Staying on the trails is best so you can see what you're stepping on. Leave the pets at home. Do not feed or harass the animals.
