Leftovers and I depart from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with eight days of food to get us to Rawlins, Wyoming. We drop from the mountains of northern Colorado into the wide open space of Wyoming's Great Divide Basin. This desert plain is a unique point on the Divide where no water drains to either ocean. The CDT follows a series of increasingly desolate dirt roads across this vast landscape. The eight days go by smoothly enough, including my first day walking over 30 miles. Rawlins is a fine place for a rest day before continuing on. We follow the historic Oregon Trail for a day, and are joined by another hiker named Gargoyle. Eventually we reach the old western town of South Pass City, where many pioneers crossed the Divide. Here I pick up another eight days of food along with my ice ace and crampons, anticipating a great adventure in the next stretch as I chart a course through the Wind River Range.
