Stabilizing Slopes to prevent future Landslides at Hesquiaht Harbour

Back in the 80’s when the mountains surrounding Hesquiaht Harbour were logged, many roads weren’t constructed up to code, cutting too deep into the hill slopes which resulted in a series of landslides that travel all the way down to the rivers and creeks below. When the debris reaches those creeks, it overwhelms the channels with material and smothers fish habitat. Landslides like this are not a one time event either, and they continue to bleed sediments with each heavy rain, eroding more and more material into these precious waterways. In order to stabilize these landslides, we build modified brush layers using willow stakes, rebar and 2x6 boards that work to decrease the angle of the slope while also providing stable platforms for trees and plants to root on. The willow stakes help to solidify the soil by rooting in and sprouting new leaves in the spring, which helps hold it all together for the replanted Cedar, Fir and Hemlock that we use to reforest the slope. Over time, these steep slopes will develop into healthy diverse forests that will work to keep the hillside intact and from collapsing down into the streams and rivers below that our beloved Salmon need so much.
