At RightsCon 2021, we discussed why routing security should become a cyber norm. The session's detail can be found here: https://rightscon.summit.tc/t/2021/ev... -------- The global routing system of the Internet – based on BGP – is inherently insecure and is increasingly under attack from activists and criminals who see the opportunity to steal data and cause disruption. State-level actors are also manipulating the routing system to impose censorship, undertake espionage and/or conduct cyber warfare. The Internet is built on cooperation, common values and agreed practices, but a resilient and secure global system also needs to become a common value amongst network operators. Good routing security practices need to be accepted as a norm, building on industry developed actions brought together by the Mutually Assured Norms for Routing Security (MANRS) initiative. Network operators, CDN & Cloud providers, and IXPs need to be taking collective responsibility for the resilience and security of a critical part of the Internet infrastructure, equipment vendors can help by implementing routing security features, whilst governments can encourage adoption of routing security norms to ensure secure, reliable and trustworthy Internet services for the social and economic well-being of their states.
