Previously a wired physical element fitted to the dashboard, the in-cab control for Kerstner CoolJet refrigeration units can now be integrated into the vehicle's digital dashboard, via a multi-protocol communicating gateway, the Smart Connected Box. Kerstner, the Lamberet Group subsidiary dedicated to commercial vehicle refrigeration units, is thus offering the first range of refrigeration units with controls integrated into the digital dashboard of commercial vehicles. The technical innovation lies in the ability to reproduce the functions of the in-cab control to an Android Auto application installed on the vehicle's native touchscreen. Communication from the ECU, the refrigeration unit's central computer, is based on the CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol. The Smart Connected Box acts as a gateway between this protocol and the Android protocol, providing both a digital conversion of the language (comparable to an API) and a physical link for transmitting instructions and connecting to the vehicle interface. Using this protocol also means that functions can be added from the vehicle's CAN (evaporator cut-out, alerts, etc.) and the manufacturer's OTA connectivity can be used to power a remote unit monitoring application.
