Mount Athos - Greece - UNESCO

Inscribed in 1988 by UNESCO. A religious enclave with its own autonomy in Greece. Men only - no women allowed. There are 13 UNESCO sites that have discriminatory entry policies, mostly if you are not of that religion, however 3 do not allow women to enter its site at all. Mt Athos is one of these and Japan has the other 2 sites. Mt Athos only allows 10 Pilgrims of other religious faiths than Greek Orthodox per day as well, so it is difficult to visit. We visited the following Monasteries and locations during our visit on the 8th of October 2025. St. Panteleimon Monastery, Monastery of Iviron, Stavronikita Monastery and the Church of St. Nicholas, Monastery of Vatopedi, Orthodox Church of the icon of the Mother of God, Saint Andrews Holy Skete, Daphni and Karyes.
