Deep Purple's Who Do We Think We Are (1973) was the last album from the classic Mark II lineup — and it's been unfairly dismissed for over 50 years. Sandwiched between Machine Head and Burn, it never stood a chance. But what if two simple changes could rescue it? In this video, I reimagine the Who Do We Think We Are tracklist by cutting the weakest track and resequencing the rest for better flow. The result is a tighter, more cohesive album that finally does justice to what Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice recorded in those tense final sessions together. This was a band on the verge of collapse. Gillan and Blackmore could barely stand to be in the same room. The recording sessions in Rome were miserable. And yet they still produced "Woman from Tokyo," "Smooth Dancer," and the criminally underrated "Our Lady." The material was better than the album's reputation suggests — it just needed a better running order. My Reimagined Tracklist: SIDE A 1. Woman from Tokyo 2. Smooth Dancer 3. Super Trouper 4. Painted Horse SIDE B 5. Mary Long 6. Rat Bat Blue 7. Our Lady 🎧 LISTEN TO MY RESEQUENCED VERSION: • Deep Purple: Who Do We Think We Are Re-ima... Who Do We Think We Are was recorded between July and October 1972 in Rome at Pio Studios, with the band barely functioning as a unit. Ian Gillan has called it the worst period of his time in Deep Purple. Despite all of that, the album hit #4 in the UK and #15 in the US — proof that even a struggling Mark II could outperform most bands at their peak. This video is part of my "How It Should Have Been" series, where I reimagine classic Deep Purple albums with tighter tracklists and better sequencing.
