19. Our clay plastered walls

There have been a lot of elements of this build that we were excited and a bit anxious about, our clay interiors being one of the main ones. This is totally unfamiliar territory for us, but what’s new?! We researched the best we could (we’ll have a video out with ALL of our resources and recommendations), but ultimately you just have to try it out, and usually remedy a bit as you go. We wanted to do clay on the interior walls for a few reasons-- It’s abundant where we live It’s durable when done correctly It’s VERY moisture regulating, breathable and anti-mold It’s beautiful It’s a natural and very healthy material free of anything toxic or harmful, and that’s the kind of home we wanted There are a lot of options for finishing clay plaster. We did a finish coat, but some natural builders take it even further and do a much finer, more painted on finish coat. We debated, but ultimately decided to just leave it at our plastered finish coat and see how it does. Now that it’s dry and gone through a bit of wear and tear, we’re still very happy with it!
