Let's start by saying that you won't find another De Tomaso Pantera like this one. The one you see, from 1979, currently in Group 5 "Short-Tail" racing configuration, has a very special history. I want to thank the German team at Braun Motorsport for their kindness; they completed this project and are overseeing its development and maintenance. I also thank driver Ralf Kelleners, whose experience you can see on board, and the car's owner, Detlet von der Lieck, a De Tomaso enthusiast and owner of another model in Group 4 configuration that I've already filmed. In this video, we return to August 2022, when the car took to the track at the Paul Ricard circuit during the Dix Mille by Peter Auto event. If I remember correctly, this was the car's first real track appearance after a lengthy restoration, and all you'll see are the initial laps of tuning and development. The car, chassis number 0001 (or 001), is the same one built initially by Italian constructors William Sala and Giovanni Marverti, who, starting from an entirely new chassis supplied by De Tomaso, created a Pantera with Group 5 specifications. Driven by drivers Maurizio Micangeli and Carlo Pietromarchi, it competed in the European Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979 and 1980. Subsequently, the same car, following the FIA's abandonment of Group 5 in favour of Group C, was significantly modified to compete in the new category in the 1983 season. Unfortunately, this latter evolution could not compete on equal terms with cars specifically designed for the new Group C regulations. The current owner found the car in Italy, near Maranello, in this latter configuration, having remained unused for over 25 years. Once acquired, the project began to revive it, restoring its shape and characteristics to those of its Group 5 racing days. In the video, you see it restored in "Short-Tail" configuration, but at the time, it featured various nose, wing, and tail configurations (including Silhouette) depending on the circuit. Mechanically, it is equipped with a 5.7-litre (351 cu in) naturally aspirated Ford Cleveland V8 engine, mounted longitudinally in a mid-rear position, capable of producing over 500 hp. The car is extremely light, just over 1,100 kg, and its performance is excellent. In this video, you'll notice the car reaching its rev limit on the long Mistral straight, and that a different gear ratio would certainly have allowed it to reach higher speeds. Please note, however, that early testing was underway when this video was made, and I'm sure the car has undergone modifications and refined its setup and performance over the years and in subsequent races. It can currently be seen competing in some races of the Peter Auto European Historic Car Championship or at the Belmot Grand Prix in Germany. I have to thank my friend and YouTuber @19Bozzy92 with whom I collaborated to realise this video.
