Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, has vowed to avenge those killed in the ongoing conflict and warned that Iran will continue attacks on U.S. bases while keeping pressure on the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The remarks, read out on Iranian state television, mark the first public statement attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei since he succeeded his slain father, Ali Khamenei. However, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, signalled a more cautious stance. Speaking to reporters in New York, Iravani said Tehran does not plan to close the Strait of Hormuz and remains committed to the principle of freedom of navigation under international law. His remarks come even as Iran’s new leadership suggested that the leverage of potentially blocking the critical shipping route should continue to be used amid rising regional tensions.
