Regardless of whether you use Family Historian, Family Tree Makes, Heredis, Rootsmagic or some other genealogy software, stop and think. You will want to name your file Media file names with a meaningful file name so you can easily find them again. Media files grow quicker that you ever thought and the same system can be applied to your home office environment. More and more digital copies of original documents are becoming available and we all want local copies of those documents but those file names need to mean something. If you are downloading from Ancestry, My Heritage or Find My Past then those files are going to arrive on your system with non descriptive file names. Those files will will mean nothing to you by eye and really you want to know what is in those files. Renaming to a good file naming standard is vital and Family Historian and Family Tree Maker allow you to do that. Unfortunately Rootsmagic does not allow that function so check out their help forums to see if other users can help. Feel free to share my presentation, just do not remove the branding. Both the document supplied by Gary Gauthier and a PDF copy of the presentation are now available in the shared support folder on Dropbox, follow the link below.
