Zinc-air batteries show promise as tougher, safer alternative to lithium-ion

Researchers in Mexico have created a new type of battery that appears to be a tougher and safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries. Instead of using a flammable liquid as the electrolyte, their design combines tiny nickel atoms on a carbon sheet with zinc and a gel polymer. Tests showed the battery still worked after being punctured by a nail, exposed to fire, and submerged in water -- and its performance wasn't affected by very hot or very cold temperatures.
