NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... What happens when you find the courage to leave your comfort zone and lose sight of the shore? Emmy Award–winning filmmaker Sarah Moshman shares her decade-long journey following the story of a lifetime: four women known as the Coxless Crew, who in April 2015 set out in a pink 29-foot ocean rowing boat named Doris and rowed more than 8,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, setting two world records along the way. Rowing 24 hours a day—two hours on, two hours off—for nine relentless months, they faced unimaginable physical and mental challenges. At the same time, Sarah battled her own obstacles, chasing their story from land, air, and sea as the act of telling it became its own test of endurance. This talk offers a behind-the-scenes look at bringing Losing Sight of Shore from a bold idea to Netflix worldwide—and the lasting ripple effect of a story that continues to inspire a decade later. Sarah Moshman is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and TEDx speaker whose work has been featured on Netflix, PBS, CNN, Good Morning America, and Marie Claire. She has directed and produced three acclaimed documentaries—The Empowerment Project (2014), Losing Sight of Shore (2017), and Nevertheless (2020)—each celebrating resilience, ambition, and the strength of women. Her narrative films include UNBOUND, a short about the first mother in space starring Lauren Lapkus, which won NASA’s 2022 CineSpace Competition and screened on the International Space Station, and A MOTHER IS BORN, exploring the transformation into motherhood. Fueled by a mission to uplift and inspire, Sarah creates stories that champion strong female role models and spark meaningful conversations. She also mentors aspiring filmmakers through her book Empowered Filmmaking and teaches workshops worldwide. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
