The Darwin Lecture is an annual lecture rotating between the Linnean Society and the Royal Society of Medicine.. Our speaker for this Darwin Lecture was Professor Michael Hochberg, Research Director with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and based at the University of Montpellier, France. Prof. Michael Hochberg provides an overview of how evolution shapes cancer over multiple biological levels, from cells to species. He presents both theory and empirical findings that elucidate the contributions of selection and environment to patterns in some of the best studied mammals, including humans. Prof. Hochberg shows how cancer-mediated selection may occur at other biological levels and, in particular, may have influenced the structure of organ systems in our bodies. Finally, he reviews how evolution not only characterises tumour growth, but may also be harnessed in anti-cancer therapies. The Linnean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society. Founded in 1788, the Society takes its name from the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778). https://www.linnean.org/ Follow us on social media: / linneansociety / linneansociety / linneansociety
