Feria de Málaga, one of the most important summer festivals on the Costa del Sol, will take place this year from August 16th to 23rd, 2025. The origins of the fair go back to August 19, 1487, when the Catholic Monarchs conquered Málaga and incorporated the city into the Crown of Castile. To commemorate this event, the old City Council approved an annual celebration, originally held on August 15. Over time, the festivities expanded, and by the 20th century—starting with the first official meeting in 1941—the modern version of the fair began to take shape. A Festival in Two Spaces One of the unique aspects of the Feria de Málaga is that it takes place in two different areas: •The Day Fair (Feria de Día) is held in the historic center of Málaga, with Calle Larios as the heart of the celebrations. The entrance gate is beautifully decorated each year with flowers and lights, and the streets come alive with music, food stalls, and flamenco performances. Visitors will find people dressed in traditional costumes—men in campero outfits and women in trajes de gitana (gypsy dresses)—while enjoying tapas, drinks, and handicrafts. •The Night Fair (Feria de Noche) takes place at the Cortijo de Torres fairgrounds, a vast space designed to host thousands of visitors. Here you’ll find casetas (booths), live music, bars, rides for all ages, and plenty of food options showcasing both Málaga’s cuisine and Spanish classics. The atmosphere is particularly vibrant when the cover of the fairgrounds is lit up on the first Saturday night, officially opening the celebrations. Highlights at the Real de la Feria (Cortijo de Torres) During the day, one of the most traditional spectacles is the horse and carriage parade, full of color and elegance. Visitors can also enjoy the election of the Queen and Mister of the Fair, a parade where participants show off beautiful flamenco dresses. At night, the casetas come alive: it is public and open to everyone. Inside, you’ll find tablaos (dance floors) where people dance flamenco, verdiales, malagueñas, and sevillanas. Drinks, Flavors, and Traditions No Feria de Málaga is complete without its iconic drinks and symbols: •Cartojal – a sweet, cold white wine made from Muscatel grapes, sold everywhere during the fair. A 750ml bottle usually costs between 5–7 euros. •Rebujito – a refreshing mix of manzanilla wine with Sprite or 7Up, served very cold with mint. •La biznaga – the flower symbol of Málaga, made from jasmine carefully arranged on a dried thistle. During the fair, biznagas are sold throughout the city, adding a touch of tradition and fragrance to the festivities. Unlike the Seville Fair, the Feria de Málaga is an open festival—visitors are free to walk through the streets, enter booths, and enjoy the activities without restrictions.
