Once, King Madhav Chandra Dev (54-36 CE) of the Sun dynasty went to the forest near "Bruthi Krudher" (the forest between present-day Patnagarh and Belpada) in search of a Rhinoceros that was harassing his kingdom. He failed to do so and was tired. He became exhausted. While resting at the base of a hill, Goddess Bandurga appeared to the king. The king prayed to Goddess Bandurga to be installed as the Ishta Devi of the kingdom. When the goddess said, "I will remain in the forest of Bandurga, but once a year, on the bright day of Ashwin, I will go to the city and get worshipped (Jharbayel) and on the bright day of Ashwin, I will give darshan to all the people (Bayel Yatra)". From that day on, Maa Bandurga, the goddess of Patnagarh (Pattangarh), was installed as Maa Pataneswari (Pattaneswari) at the place of worship by Kandara Rajagyana (71 BC). She comes. Before that, she was worshipped in the temple as Kamchandi. Maa Pataneswari is the presiding deity and guardian goddess of Patnagarh (the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Patna) in Bolangir, Odisha, worshipped as a form of Durga.
