This is our 97th video documenting our exploration of the model railroading hobby. It is the 29th video for our fourth (HO Scale) layout. In this video, we show the unboxing of a new Athearn Genesis model of the EMD SD70 ACe locomotive. As we mentioned in our previous video, the SD70 series is one of the most popular locomotives in use in our area today. The ACe version is one of the more common versions. We bought this model to compare to the Broadway Limited Imports die-cast model of the same locomotive. The Athearn Genesis version has slightly better detailing than the BLI version, and is also well packaged to protect the detailing. I chose the Kansas City Southern "Belle" paint scheme to be different from the UP heritage scheme we already had and because I like the KCS paint. The Genesis version is not as fast as the BLI version, but both are faster in scale speed than the prototypes. The Genesis also pulls well, with no decrease in speed with pulling 15 cars. I prefer the BLI, but only because of the smoke unit installed. The Athearn Genesis model is also an excellent model.
