Altham Church St James and ancient crossing, Hyndburn, Lancashire

This is the church at Altham Lancashire and dates back to 1140ad. Down river is an ancient crossing and going passed the church an old highway called the kings highway. Some of the church is from the c16th and the rest was destroyed in the civil war 1642 as there was a battle near by at whinny hill about 1 mile away. The hacking family from Huncoat rebuilt the church in 1854 a Thomas Hacking and there is a memorial for them in the church. Going up the hill behind is the village of read and further up the hill was a roman garrison fort at portfield bar with and exiting road.
